All You Want To Know About Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Of all the various kinds of dental problems that one might suffer in a lifetime, the problem with the wisdom tooth is by far the most common. And contrary to what many might believe, it has got no relation to eating junk, sweets and drinking colas.

You might have heard countless times about people getting their wisdom tooth extracted, but have not experienced it yourself. So, here is all that you would like to know about extracting the wisdom tooth.

Why Does It Need To Be Extracted?

The wisdom teeth are the permanent set of four teeth located at the extreme back corners of your gum. These are the last set of adult teeth that are known to appear in people of the age range of 17 to 25 years. But not all people are needed to undergo this procedure of wisdom tooth extraction.

If your dentist has suggested that your wisdom teeth need to be removed, then it might be for reasons like:

They are growing angularly – In some people, the wisdom tooth tends to grow at the wrong angle, in turn pressing against the other teeth. This incorrect angle of growth causes pain, as the tooth tries to make its way up
There is not enough space – It might happen that your jaw is not big enough to accommodate this extra tooth that is beginning to grow. This wisdom tooth, therefore, tries to push your gums and jawbone, in turn causing pain
There are cavities in your teeth – In case the dentist detects ailments of the gum or cavities in your teeth, the wisdom tooth might need to be removed
Orthodontic treatments – If you are undergoing dental treatment to straighten the other teeth, then chances are high that your wisdom tooth will be removed

How much does it hurt?

If you have already suffered pain due to a faulty wisdom tooth, you are wise enough to know that no pain can be as excruciating as that!

So, yes, the total procedure of removing the wisdom tooth is usually much less painful and takes barely 45 minutes. Moreover, your dental surgeon will apply local anesthesia or sedatives, as required, to make it more bearable.

Are there any risks?

Although removing a wisdom tooth involves a mild surgical procedure, complications are hardly found to occur. In the rarest of rare cases, the surrounding teeth jawbone or nerve might be impacted if proper care is not taken during the extraction.

Conclusion

It takes two to three days to completely heal and get back to a pain-free normal life after your wisdom tooth extraction.  But for that to happen, you need to ensure that you religiously follow your dentist's advice on the aftercare steps and are punctual with the regular checkups too.
